I get this question at least once or twice a month. It’s easily a top-ten question when people talk to me about growing their company and how to build out their organization for optimum growth. I receive unsolicited job posts from LinkedIn all the time where some company is seeking a COO and has no idea how to fill the job.
In most cases, the base pay they advertise is relatively low, and most of the competing applicants listed in the LinkedIn other applicants are marginally qualified; someone from that pile is eventually hired for the role.
What they are really seeking, for the most part, is a general manager. They are just calling it “COO” when the candidate doesn’t meet the minimum qualifications of a real COO.
